The power of being present

Monday morning, I was on the phone with my sister on the way to JFK when I realized my flight had departed five minutes prior.  My heart started racing and, freaking out, I promptly hung up on my sister (sorry Kate!).  How did this happen?  I made a mistake.  I was so excited about getting home that in my mind, I had confused my arrival time with my departure time.  My mind is a fun place to be.  In any case, I carry on with my fit for a moment longer and then quickly start to take action.  I call my husband and let him know what’s up.  I call the airline and they explain what I need to do once I get to the airport.  Then I call a friend, who is also a coach and get some support.  I start working through the feelings I am having about my “mistake” and get some perspective about what is really going on for me.  I arrive at the airport and take on the entire experience from my Essence**.  I am relaxed.  I am warm to the people I speak with.  I am even enjoying myself! While I am standing in the security line, there is a woman behind me who is very upset.  She is snapping at everyone around her and it is extremely clear she is miserable.  I feel compassion for her — because I used to be her.  I used to love to blame others.  I used to love to blame it on life — “the unfairness of it all!”  And now I love to empower myself...

Mirabelle’s Aquarium

I feel really inspired to reach out and connect right now.  I hadn’t planned on sending anything out, but I’ve learned enough to know that when I’m feeling called to act, I act.  Today I went to Target with my 11-month-old daughter, Mirabelle.  She really enjoys a nice stroll in a shopping cart.  While we were going through the toy section, she got super excited and started yelling at all the toys and reaching for them jubilantly.  I began thinking, “Sarah, you are in big trouble with this one.  Just wait until she gets bigger — she’s going to want every toy in the place.”  But as I pushed us quickly out of the toy section, her excitement did not diminish.  I realized that she was excited about EVERYTHING.  Sponges.  Handsoap.  Thank-you cards.  She sees wonder in everything, everywhere.  As we get older, that wonder can become dim or even disappear.  But what is possible for us in our lives if we take responsibility for creating our own joy?  What if we choose to look at life with wonder and curiosity?  From wonder and curiousity, I promise that your next trip to Target will be the best you’ve ever had. Anna’s Rock Man

I write today, tired, but with a full heart.  So much happens each day, in each breath — as individuals, in our communities and in the world at large.  I had the good fortune of attending a yoga class the afternoon of the Boston Marathon.  Shaking my head with anger, frustration and a deep sense of sadness, I found comfort and support in a yoga studio, on my mat.  The lovely teacher, Allison, had us sit with what happened and encompass the city and people of Boston with our hearts and our breath.  To just be.  A powerful practice for someone feeling extremely powerless in that moment.  And I was reminded how powerful conscious people are.  People who strive to make the world a better place.  People whose actions make others smile and feel better, just by being them.  This photo of the rock man is provided by such a human; a dear friend who lives on the water and visits the beach daily and makes sculptures out of rocks because it brings her joy.  And her joy spreads to every person who happens to stumble upon her beautiful work.  I guess what I’m trying to say is, shine your light.  Take excellent care of yourself.  Acknowledge yourself and the people you love in your life.  And continue to meditate and pray for peace on this Earth.
